10 Rocking Anime Songs From Winter 2020

Another anime season means another wave of excellent anime music. From openings and endings to movie themes and insert songs, here are the songs I’ve most enjoyed over the winter 2020 season.

*Note: Songs are presented in alphabetical order by series.

Anime: Black Clover

Song: “Black Catcher”

Artist: Vickeblanka

Why I Love It: Maybe it’s the jazz piano rocking throughout. Maybe it’s the perfectly on pitch falsetto. Maybe it’s both. Yeah. it’s totally both.

Anime: Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia

Anime: Fate/strange Fake (TVCM)

Song: “BELONG”

Artist: SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:Yosh

Why I Love It: Powerful male vocals shown off by Sawano’s usually brilliant composition tease an anime we’re not likely to see for at least a few years.

Anime: GeGeGe no Kitaro

Song: “A.M.D.K.J.”

Anime: Heya Camp

Song: “The Sunshower”

Anime: Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story

Anime: My Hero Academia (Season 4)

Song: “Might+U”

Artist: Makayla Phillips

Why I Love It: This song is what happens when you take “You Say Run!”–i.e., the music that plays whenever something heroic happens in My Hero Academia–add vocals, and turn it into a fully orchestrated ballad.

Anime: Pet

Song: “Chou no Tobu Suisou”

Artist: TK from Ling Tosite Sigure

Why I Love It: With this one, it’s all about how the most powerful moments in the song come not from when he displays his impressive falsetto, but when he drops down into his chest voice instead. It’s a total reversal of the norm.

Anime: Plunderer

Song: “Countless Days”

Artist: Rina Honnizumi

Why I Love It: This fun little ballad is light and poppy yet–at the same time–is sung with obvious emotion.
