Why I Love It: I like how this song is structured. Not only does it have a catchy chorus but also it’s a chorus that seems to go on twice as long as you expect.

Anime: Ancient Girl’s Frame
Song: “Galactic Wind”
Artist: MARiA
Why I Love It: The full body of MARiA’s voice—and the occasional breaks into her female falsetto—make this song better than it has any right to be.

Artist: TK from Ling Tosite Sigure
Why I Love It: From raspy notes and pure tones to falsetto and metal screaming, this song is a master class in the possibilities of the male singing voice.

Why I Love It: The big band horns and the “ooooo” in the chorus get me every time. “Let’s go” indeed.

Song: “THEME FROM LUPIN III 2021”
Artist: Yuji Ohno & Lupintic Six with Friends
Why I Love It: This song has been remixed countless times over the years. However, this season’s focus on the electric guitar backed with horns to deliver the melody—along with the iconic vocals from the 70s—make this a hard one to beat.

Song: “Labyrinth of Time”
Artist: Ranka Lee=Megumi Nakajima and Sheryl Nome starring May’n
Why I Love It: This is a new Macross Frontier song written by Yoko Kanno and sung by the original singers. It’s goddamned magic as far as I’m concerned.

Why I Love It: What starts off almost sounding like a classical hymn turns into a hard rock song with awesome female vocals throughout.

Artist: Tokyo Monsters
Why I Love It: This one almost sounds like a late 90s/early 2000s boy band song with dark undertones—and, for some reason, I’m totally here for that.

Anime: The Heike Story
Song: “Hikaru Toki”
Artist: Hitsujibungaku
Why I Love It: As far as I’m concerned, this is the best song on the list hands down. It’s a strikingly emotional tune that perfectly fits the joys and tragedies of the anime it’s attached to. And when you pair it with Studio Saru’s visuals… well, it can bring you to tears.

Anime: World Trigger (Season 3)
Song: “Ungai Shoukei”
Artist: FantasticYouth
Why I Love It: The various singers have a ton of fun playing around with syncopation in the verses and then all come together to form a soaring chorus filled out with both male and female vocals.

Why I Love It: Not only is this an awesome rock song that goes from laidback to climactic, but it also incorporates the main theme songs from past Final Fantasy XIV releases into one awesome medley.
